St. Paul the Apostle Chapel

Chapel ViewWelcome to St. Paul the Apostle Chapel.
All who enter here will feel the closeness of the Lord.

St. Paul the Apostle is a very active parish of the Catholic Diocese of Austin. The parish currently includes a growing congregation of more than 200 registered families.

The Chapel Complex

The Chapel stands high atop Thanksgiving Mountain. Walls of glass behind the main altar provide a breathtaking view over Lake LBJ and the surrounding countryside.

Exquisite original artwork and appointments fashioned by renowned artist Sister Mary Peter Tremonte of San Antonio, Texas, enhance the entire Chapel complex.

In addition to its stunning main chapel, the complex also has a small chapel, an ecumenical library, a large meeting room, kitchen facilities, offices and priest's residence. All buildings are fully accessible to persons with disabilities.

The Pastor

Father Peter Higgins was appointed pastor of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Horseshoe Bay on December 17, 2005.

Father Higgins was born and raised in Ireland. He attended the seminary at St. John’s College in Waterford, Ireland and was ordained at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Waterford on June 17, 1956. Soon after his ordination, he came to Texas and served as associate pastor at Catholic churches in San Antonio, Karnes City, Yoakum and Victoria.

Father Higgins was the pastor of churches in Cuero, Hillje and Blessing, and was the founding pastor of Holy Family Parish in Victoria. He retired in 1999 and came to live in Horseshoe Bay, but still celebrated Mass at Our Lady of the Lake in Sunrise Beach.

In December of 2005, at the request of Bishop Aymond of the Austin Diocese, Father Higgins came out of retirement to become pastor of St. Paul the Apostle. In his spare time, Father Higgins enjoys going out in his boat on Lake LBJ.

The Community of St. Paul the Apostle welcomes people from all over the country to enjoy this place of prayerful reflection. God’s handiwork is visible in this beautiful, natural setting.

The History

Interdenominational services began here in 1972 under the direction of Father Walter J. Dalton, CSP, who offered Mass in a variety of places in Horseshoe Bay before the Chapel was built. In 1979 Wayne and Eileen Hurd donated property for a chapel and a portion of the funds to build it. The property was named Thanksgiving Mountain.

The Chapel was dedicated on December 5, 1982, and for over 10 years served the entire religious community of Horseshoe Bay.

The Community of St. Paul the Apostle welcomes people from all over the country to enjoy this place of prayerful reflection. God's handiwork is visible in this beautiful natural setting.
